The Ogun State Government has shut down Phoenix Steel Mills Industries Limited in Ogijo axis of Sagamu Local Government following a gas explosion that ripped through the factory on Saturday night at about 2138hrs.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, announced the immediate closure after visiting the scene. The explosion caused significant damage to the company's production line.
"Following established protocol, a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the explosion," Oresanya stated. "This will help us prevent similar incidents in the future."
The investigation will assess the safety protocols at the plant and determine the conditions under which the company can resume operations. The safety of workers and the surrounding communities is a top priority for the government.
Nine employees sustained serious injuries in the blast and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in nearby Ikorodu, Lagos State.
