In commemoration of this year's International Widows' Day, the Rivers State Ministry of Women Affairs (RWMWA), in collaboration with the United Nations Association of Nigeria (UNAN), organized an impactful empowerment programme themed 'Skills for Widows' Empowerment.' The event took place on Monday, July 1st, at the Women Development Centre in Port Harcourt.
The event saw over 100 widows gather to share their personal experiences, challenges, and coping mechanisms in their journey as widows. This provided a platform for mutual support and understanding among the participants. The programme was designed to equip these women with practical skills, including soap making and bleach making, aimed at fostering financial independence and self-reliance.
In addition to the training, several beneficiaries received cash rewards, and 10 widows were further supported with start-up kits to help them begin their own businesses. This tangible support emphasizes the commitment of the RWMWA and UNAN to not only provide skills but also the resources necessary to implement them.
The event was graced by Dr. Roseline Apawari Uranta, the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs, Rivers State, who served as the special guest of honour. The Director of Finance & Accounts, Rivers State, was also present, highlighting the state's commitment to the cause.
Dr. Uranta, in her goodwill message, encouraged the widows to seek help whenever needed and reassured them of the state government's dedication to alleviating the sufferings of its people. "The state government is doing everything humanly possible to support and uplift the lives of Rivers people," she stated, emphasizing the government's ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of widows.
The event also featured virtual participation from UNAN's President, Dr. (Mrs) Joan Agha; Vice President, Mrs. Ijeoma Nweke; Secretary General, Dr. Omopeju Afanu; as well as other executives and members of the Association across Nigeria. They expressed deep appreciation for the resilience and strength demonstrated by the widows. "We are committed to supporting you as you continue to build brighter futures for yourselves and your families. Together, we can achieve great things," Dr. Agha remarked, echoing the collective sentiment of hope and empowerment.
In her goodwill remark, the Chairperson of the Planning Committee, Dr. Mercy Bello Abu extended a warm welcome to all participants, emphasizing the significance of coming together to commemorate International Widow’s Day. She highlighted that the event is a testament to the resilience, strength, and courage of widows worldwide. Dr. Abu honoured their journeys and acknowledged the unique challenges they face, expressing gratitude for the support in advocating for the rights and well-being of widows. She concluded by reaffirming the collective commitment to making a positive difference in their lives.
This celebration of International Widow's Day in Rivers State not only highlighted the challenges faced by widows but also showcased the strength and resilience of these women when given the right support and opportunities.
