The youth Chairman of Ogun State, Olóyè Akolawole Shoremi, has described the members of a group, Trustees of the Voters Awareness Initiative, who recently dragged the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) to a Federal High Court in Lagos State over the lowered age of candidacy, as antagonists of young people.
Shoremi made this known, at Ogun Youth House, MKO Abiola Stadium, on Friday October 18 , 2024, as he played host to some youth Leaders who had requested the youth Council to intensify efforts to propel the emergence of young Candidates at the forthcoming elections.
During the meeting, the youth Chairman who expressed disappointment at the unsatisfactory number of young people as Parties’ Candidates further described the initiation of a lawsuit against the OGSIEC as unnecessary and a subtle attempt of some Politicians, with anti-youth ideologies, to distract the peaceful conduct of elections from holding in November.
“I read with disbelief a lawsuit, filed by some politicians posing as a non-governmental organisation, against the Ogun State Independent Electoral Committee challenging the reduction in age of candidacy,” Shoremi stated.
“The prayer on revert of the age of candidacy, as announced by OGSIEC, amongst other concerns, is a sly on the youth constituency. And such people challenging policies aimed at building the relevance of the youth obviously do not mean well for the youth constituency of Ogun State.
“As custodians of the future, we are obliged to promote the interest of our young people at all times. Hence, this suit, by its manners and period of initiation, is nothing but a strategic attempt to subdue the relevance of our youth in governance on this day and tomorrow,” he concluded.
Shoremi further urged the youth to be active citizens and not leave the future of the Local Governments in the hands of Politicians. According to the youth Chairman, the dawn of autonomy for the Local Governments poised a new beginning to set things right. He therefore called on the youth Council Branches across the twenty (20) Local Governments to forthwith commence interactive forums with party candidates to understand their ideologies and identify those worthy of associating with.
