The youth delegation of Ogun State, on Saturday December 7, 2024, arrived at the city of Port-Harcout, Rivers State, in a celebration mood, as tens of thousands of youth Stakeholders across the nation joined the host State for the 4—days Diamond Jubilee anniversary of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN).
The event underscored the NYCN’s mandate as the authoritative voice of the Nigerian Youth. It advocated for youth-friendly policies that foster active participation and inclusion of young people in economic, cultural, social and political spheres.
Delivering his welcome address at the Opening Ceremony, the National President and Secretary of the Board of Trustees for the NYCN, Amb. Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo stated that the activities of the youth Council have not only empowered countless young Nigerians but have also contributed significantly to nation building and social cohesion.
The Vice—President of Nigeria, His Excellency, Sen. Kashim Shettima GCON, represented by his Technical Adviser for Youth and Women Initiatives, Mrs. Hauwa Liwan, lauded the NYCN as a formidable group that transcends ethnic and religious challenges for the holistic growth of the youth constituency. He further charged the youth leadership to remain resolute in its developmental pursuits for the young people of Nigeria, in line with the renewed hope agenda.
In his goodwill message, the Minister for Youth Development, Hon. Olawande Ayodele celebrated the NYCN in recognition of the vital role it plays in empowerment and development of Nigerian Youths. “The NYCN has been instrumental in promoting youth development, empowerment, and participation in governance since its establishment in 1964. Its efforts have led to numerous empowerment programmes, scholarships, and support initiatives,” Olawande said.
There were several goodwill messages from other Guests of Honour including the Governors of Rivers and Bayelsa States, HE Sir Siminalayi Fubara and HE Sen. Duoye Diri; Commissioners of Youth Development, and Captains of Industries.
The event, hosted by the Governments of Rivers and Bayelsa States was held at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Elekhia, Port-Harcout, and concluded with a Thanksgiving Service, and Award/Dinner Night on subsequent days.
