Chinese Expatriate Suspected in Death of Female Crane Operator at Abia Steel Company

In a tragic incident at Inner Galaxy Steel Company, a female crane operator, Ocheze Ogbonna, has reportedly been killed by a Chinese expatriate after rejecting his romantic advances. The incident has sparked outrage and demands for justice.

Chris Nkwonta, the member representing Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives, confirmed the reports. According to Nkwonta, the Chinese national, employed at the steel company, allegedly pushed Ogbonna from the crane after she refused his propositions, as reported by Daily Trust.

This case echoes another recent incident where a Chinese man, Frank Geng Quarong, was convicted for the murder of his Nigerian lover, Ummukulsum Sani Buhari, after she ended their relationship. Quarong had claimed to have spent over N60 million on Buhari during their two-year relationship.

In a statement, Nkwonta expressed profound sorrow over Ogbonna's death and condemned the expatriate's alleged actions as a severe violation of human rights and an affront to the local community. He emphasized that Ukwa West is known for its peaceful nature and demanded justice for the victim.

“Miss Ocheze Ogbonna’s death orchestrated by a Chinese expatriate is a gross abuse of the rules of engagement and a total disregard for the sanctity of human life and an affront on their host community, Umuahala-Obuzor, and the peace-loving people of Ukwa West Local Government Area,” Nkwonta stated.

He called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, the Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Barr. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to ensure the alleged perpetrator, identified as Mr. Power, faces legal consequences. Nkwonta claimed the expatriate is being shielded by security agents and urged immediate action to prevent further escalation of tensions.

The demand for accountability and stricter oversight of foreign nationals operating in Nigeria has intensified following this and other similar incidents, highlighting ongoing concerns about the treatment of local employees by expatriates in the country.
